Away is a travelogue film documenting my experiences in and around the city of Vancouver, BC. Most of the film’s editing was done in-camera, with adjacent scenes layered overtop of one another for visual effect. I was interested in making a film that embodied the strategies of urban planning found in Vancouver: the wealthy living in opulent highrise structures above while the poor live in tents at the base of these structures below. As a pedestrian moving through the needle-ridden streets this disparity was all too present. Through superimposition I was able to layer images together to create a contrast between contexts. Scenes of natural beauty collide with industrial or neoliberal landscapes. The sterile architecture of giant shopping malls become a moving canvas for my camera. A strange mirrored sculpture unveils the hidden connotations of these structures.
This film is also a very personal diary that documents my solo foray in an unknown place. After the experience, I was relieved to return home to my family, friends, and my apartment.
